my 1st ordination
This past weekend I had the honor of participating in my good friend Kyle's ordination to the office of teacher. It was a very spiritual and humbling experience. It got me thinking about the Community of Christ sacraments. They exist in part to enhance the spiritual life of the church. What an awesome responsibility and privelege we have as priesthood to participate in them in place of Christ. It amazes me that in spite of the fact that none of us is truly worthy, God still calls us to these roles.
Hero D.O.
A recent cover of Newsweek magazine read Hero MD. The article was about a physician who served in Iraq. He saved lots of lives, built MASH units within the war zone, and received prestigious medals of honor. This doctor truly is a hero. It was a great article but the doctor was mis-represented. He isn't a MD, he is a DO. You would think a major publication like Newsweek wouldn't make such as error. You also might think it isn't really a big deal but to me it is. As you all know, I am a DO. We go to school just as long as MD's, and train along side them in our residency programs. I can honestly say that we stack up quite well academically to them. For example, my school's board scores were much higher than UMKC's. There are DO's in every specialty of medicine. We can do everything an MD can do and we can also bill for manual medicine. Currently 20% of all physicians in the armed forces are DO's. So it isn't like he was a rarity. I don't blame the general public for not knowing what a DO is because I didn't before I went to school to become one. I feel like an opportunity to educate was missed here. A cover story titled Hero D.O. certainly would have got some people questioning what does DO mean. We are a minority in medicine and we need all the free publicity we can get.
Hockey Sucks…
I must preface this post by saying that I am not a hockey fan. I never played and I am sure I do not understand many of the finer points of the game. The recent NHL playoffs further added to my disinterest in the sport. The 4 top seeds in the West were all eliminated in the first round. I am all for upsets, but in hockey it happens far too often. The regular season is essentially useless. In other sports upsets are special because they don't happen very often. To me hockey ranks somewhere just ahead of Nascar and the WNBA. Apparently most of the USA agrees with me as the playoffs are buried on the OLN network and ratings have been at times less than 1.0. Even the Redwings game we went to this year (Sarah got free tickets) was no where near as exciting as the Pistons games. So in summary…Hockey Sucks.
a quick C-note
I started using Ebay back in college. It all began when I started to put my vintage Star Wars figure collection together. I would buy lots of figures take out what I needed and turn around and sell the rest. Often this resulted in me getting my figures for free. I am totally convinced that you can find and sell almost anything on Ebay. I will never forget when jason Kelly bought 2 copper peacock wall hangings for 25 cents at the lamoni service center and sold them for $70.00. One man's junk is truly another man's treasure. ( I am sure that is how most people feel about my Star Wars collection
) This theory was again proven recently when Sarah and I decided to try and sell some of our "junk" that we no longer wanted. I put 2 ceramic M&M charcter jars up for sale. I was honestly thinking that the best case scenario would be that we might get back the $10 we paid for each of them. Much to our surprise, one sold for just under $50 and one sold for just over $50! A quick C-note fo the Allen family. Maybe some of your "junk" is worth something to someone else…you never know
