quotes of my own
A while back I blogged about some quotes I read off the wall at Jimmy Johns. I saw another list on their wall the other day. They all started with I believe….They were good but I decided to list a few of my own. Most of them are mine but I’m sure a few are ones I heard and just can’t remember before.
I believe starting to smoke is the single worst decision someone can make.
I believe in enjoying simple pleasures like watching football and playing my PS2 at the same time on my big screen TV.
I believe you can be a Democrat and a Christian.
I believe the significance of Jesus lies as much in his life as in his death.
I believe the best way to address the national healthcare crisis is for everyone to take responsibility for their own health. Each individual should stop smoking, exercise, and eat a healthy diet. This would help prevent heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and other problems; saving our society millions.
I believe I need to start working out again.
I believe it was perfectly fine for Han Solo to fire first at Greedo.
I believe someday being a father will be the most challenging and rewarding thing I ever do.
I believe Sarah will be an amazing mother which will make my job easier.
I believe too many people blame the circumstances of their upbringing for not reaching their full potential.
I believe that not every priesthood member is called to preach on Sundays.
I believe the last words of a dying church are either “we’ve always done it this way” or “we’ve never done it that way.”
I believe that with adult decisions come adult consequences. ( I tell my teen-aged patients this when they don’t want to get a PAP smear after choosing to be sexually active but it applies to other areas of life too)
I believe that friends can impact our life as much as our family can.
Quotes from an unlikely source
I read a bunch of quotes off the wall while eating lunch at Jimmy Johns. Here are a few I enjoyed that I remember. Of course I am paraphrasing
Don’t be afraid to try new things. remember a lone amateur built the arc and a group of experts built the titanic
The number one thing keeping the human race from reaching its full potential in a word –meetings
The one universal thing that spans all races, religions, genders is the fact that we all think we are above average drivers
The thing with the greatest potential to do harm is “gossip”
never lick a steak knife
never, ever, ask a woman if she is pregnant unless you see a human coming out of her at that moment
If I can remember more, I may do a part 2 to this post later.
the “Jan”
Have you ever noticed that the vast majority of our moms all have similar haircuts. You know the look; it’s short with minimal style. A woman usually gets this haircut somewhere in her 40′s or 50′s. An unscientific poll taken of my young male friends all agree that this hair style is not at all sexy. This hairdo is named after my friend John’s mom. She has had this haircut for many years now and there is no sign of change anytime soon. The name “Jan” is also perfect because the generic nature of the name matches the hairstyle it represents. It can be applied to any woman with that cut, just like you refer to someone as a Jane Doe or John Q Taxpayer. The apparent advantage of this style must be in the minimal amount of effort it takes to get ready in the morning. John points out that his mom’s routine is always the same “curl, curl, curl, brush, brush, brush”. Perhaps it’s for this reason that other woman perpetuate the spreading of the “Jan”. It’s not uncommon for a woman to tell another woman sporting a “Jan” that it looks cute. From a male point of view, I feel that the appearance of the “Jan” in some way signifies that woman throwing in the beauty towel. It’s like at that moment they’ve given up trying to look sexy. The “Jan” from time to time pops up in younger woman too. It looks even more out of place on them. You can all think of a few woman who have unsuccessfully tried this look before their time. There are even different variations of the “Jan” including the “Spikey Jan”,the “Messy Jan”, and the Jan with longer bangs. (see Teri Hatcher’s picture above for example) Unfortunately, they are all one step closer to the one true “Jan”. I will concede that a few woman look better with shorter, more Jan-like hair, but they are the exception to the rule. The vast majority simply look better in a longer style. I fully understand women in this stage of life wanting an easier, more maintenance free style. However, let’s be honest and not pretend it looks good. I wonder what hairstyle our wives will universally wear. I can only hope that it will not be the “Jan”. Through a little education and honesty we can all do our part to prevent this from happening.
new music
Now that I have jumped into the iPod nation, I have come to the realization that I must have stopped listening to music sometime in 1999 or 2000. That never dawned on me before. My only current music is Christian stuff. A guy from our church who is 19 came over and brought a bunch of his music. I am finding all kinds of songs that I have heard before that I didn’t know the artist and lots of stuff I never even knew existed. Right now I am in a phase where I like rap/R&B. I know the words are at times terrible but I am enjoying the beat. Nelly has some cool songs, I like “ridin’ dirty”, and Shakira’s “hips don’t lie”. Christian music is still my favorite and I will always love Poison and other 80′s tunes but I am broadening my tastes a bit. You should try it too.
life is burritofull
I had lunch at Chipotle today. It is soooooo good. Sarah and I were thrilled when they started popping up here in Michigan. Eating there always makes me think of our time in Kansas City and our friends who still live there. We miss you guys. Think of us when you inhale your next burrito bowl.
our first win
My kickball team won today. We are now 1 and 2. I scored the winning run which was cool. It’s such a blast.
nothin’ but a good time
Last night I attended my first Poison concert. It was amazing! It was held at an outdoor theatre with a huge hill. The place was packed. Kyle, Sheri, 12 friends from work and I were among the thousands of people there. I guess Poison sells out the D every summer. They played all there old hits and I was singing along to all of them including “every rose has its thorn”. It was such a good show, they really did a good job incorporating video, pyro, etc. It is their 20th anniversary tour, which is another sign that I am old. Look what the cat dragged in was the first cassette I ever owned. I was only 11 but I remember rockin’ out to it. I am definately planning on seeing them again next summer. It was awesome!
kickball league
I just joined an adult kickball league with a couple of people from work. It’s a blast. My games will be on Sunday evenings so they really won’t interfere with anything else. We lost our first 2 games but we had a lot of fun. It feels good to be out doing something active. I’ll keep you all posted as to how my team makes out. I’m pumped.
my new MACBOOK
I am happy to say I am writing this blog from my new MACBOOK laptop computer. I just purchased it last week. Actually, St John Oakland hospital purchased it for me. ( I used my annual expense account which is part of my benefits plan) While I am not an expert at using it, I really like it so far. I love making movies and DVDs using the programs it comes with. I even got a free iPOD nano and printer with mail in rebates. Wireless internet is available to me at work and here at the Troy public library which is genius. The Allen house will certianly need wireless access at some point. It’s been fun for me to leap forward into the technological age.
I like Joey….
I am confessing to being one of the apparently few people who likes the show Joey. No it will never be friends, but I really enjoy it still. I purchased season one last week and I honestly don’t see why this show failed. Joey is great and the rest of the cast is funny too. His agent ( MILF from American Pie) steals most of the scenes she is in. I read that they have just filmed the last 4 episodes but NBC may not even air them. I hope they at least release them as part of a season 2 DVD set. I feel like NBC gave up on this show too quickly. Joey averaged 11.7 million viewers prior to its move to Tuesday where it got destroyed by American Idol. It’s not like My Name is Earl is a rating juggernaut (46th last new episode). You can’t tell me it isn’t better than some of the horrible shows they put on now. On the last episode they aired Joey hooked up with his neighbor (he also did so in real life helping to prove Alli’s theory about actors and romantic roles ). I was hoping that might lead to a wedding/Friends reunion. I guess that’ll never happen now. At least a visit from Chandler would have been nice.
